Aubrey turns 5!!!

Our Aubrey Grace has turned 5!!! Wow...time is flying by. This girl is personality and then some! Her face is so expressive and her heart is so tender. She is a people person, she loves being where the people are. If she talks to someone for more than 2 minutes, they are her newest closest friend =) She loves school for snack time and recess ;-)

For her birthday this year, she chose Chuck E. Cheese once again. After carefully selecting her list of friends, we prepared for her party only to have 3 families end up with last minute cancellations. My heart broke for her when she asked on the morning of her birthday which friends were coming and I had to tell her of all the ones who couldn't come. Fortunately Aubrey has this personality to feel an emotion, very sad and wanting to invite more friends to come to the party in an hour and a half!, but then she moves onto her next emotion of being excited for her birthday party. I pray that she never loses this ability to keep her emotions so self-limiting.

Happy 5th birthday Aubrey!!
At our house, you get to chose the birthday menu on your day. Aubrey is our breakfast queen. She likes breakfast, brunch and binner (breakfast for dinner!). Breakfast was donuts and eggs, dinner was cream of wheat! Candles for all meals please!
See what I mean about personality?!?!
Party fun: an air-jam session with a balloon guitar, pizza, and Chuck E. Cheese giving a birthday hug
Crown, presents and party friends!
The real reason Aubrey wanted her birthday at Chuck E. Cheese was a chance to go in the TICKET BLASTER! She definitely was excited!! And she even got to choose a friend to help her. Logan was the lucky helper =)
One final birthday hoorah!
Sisters snuggled up to watch a movie together.
Aubrey's birthday celebration at preschool. Ella, Ainsley and I brought donuts for Aubrey and her friends.
At preschool, you get maracas to shake during the happy birthday song, you get to have show and tell all week, and you get to share about the pictures on your star board.
Here are Aubrey's answers to the yearly birthday questions:
Favorite animal: a girl zebra
Favorite food to eat: cream of wheat
Things I don't like to eat: salad
Favorite thing to do:go to Disneyland
Favorite show/movie: Paw Patrol
What are you really good at? painting pictures
Favorite book: Mud Fairy
What do you want to be when you grow up? a fire fighter and a nurse

Happy happy birthday Aubrey Grace! Your mommy, daddy and sisters love you so much!!

Insta- life April

All I can say for these last two months is PHEW! Busy fun, busy crazy, busy life... Aubrey is out of school, Ella will be out before I know it. Once again I'm in blog catch up mode :-0 As always, Instagram provides a brief glimpse of what we have been up to!

Aubrey was star of the week! She had show and tell each day, and her friends got to ask questions about her star board =) She was BEYOND proud of her rainbow star board with gold glittery name!

Spring really is coming! Ella is our creative tinker fairy, using her tools and random pieces of wood to make her latest creation. Aubrey joined me on the blanket for an afternoon snack. Ainsley enjoyed it being warm enough and dry enough for bare feet!!

Sunshine and my girls...this momma's heart is overflowing!

Italian sodas to celebrate the fact that today Aubrey is 5!!!!

Aubrey Grace <3 and="" br="" bubbly="" caring="" cheeks="" heart="" i="" love="" personality="" smile="" those="" your="">

For a momma who HATES peanut butter, even the smell of peanut butter, this was the ultimate worst mess! It started out as some peanut butter to dip pretzels and apple slices in for lunch; Ainsley turned it into a new kind of lotion...the stickiest, smelliest kind =0

Egg dying fun! Not pictured are Amah, Grandma Marian, daddy and mommy. It was a fun family affair!

No trip to the Children's Museum is complete without face painting. Aubrey chose to try out a new animal and wanted her face paint to look like a butterfly. "Make sure to make it symmetrical!" she told me. Nubby pieces of oily chalk on skin isn't the easiest thing to make symmetrical! Ainsley loves to "roar!"

Get up early. Stay up late. Change the world. Fitting lid from Dutch Bros on our way to Girl Scout camp!

Troop #45671 enjoying the many activities of Camp Yamhill. Rain isn't going to stand in the way of our fun!

Much much more to come...soon I hope!

Such a little mark. In the end, it is what is contained within this mark that signifies ones life. As I was faced with the idea of speaking at Poppa's memorial service, I began searching for quotes to help tie together the ideas/thoughts in my head that I could not begin to form into words. I ran across one (which I now cannot find to reference!) that basically said its not the dates on either side that are important, its the - in the middle which represents that life. How does one even begin to talk about the life contained within such a mark... 1941-2014. So many years, so many memories, so much love, so many lives touched. One small - to sum it up.

Instantly it became clear. I needed to read the story I wrote about Poppa when I was a senior in high school. It would in no way be "enough" but it felt right. But the question then became, where was the story? I knew Poppa had it. Poppa loved it. Where did he file it? That is a question we still haven't found the answer to. But fortunately, in an 11th hour miracle, Cathy (uncle Greg's wife) asked specifically what story I was looking for and knew that Uncle Greg's copy was just upstairs in the den. 50 minutes before we left for the memorial service, the story was found. Now I could share at the service.

Speaking at your Poppa’s memorial service is never something you are prepared for. Where to start? What can you say that feels like “enough?” But then it suddenly occurred to me, I could share the story I wrote about Poppa 12 years ago. I was tasked with writing “a funny story about my family.” My family is not funny I told the teacher; no luck, start writing. After I submitted the story, someone leaked it back to the family…Poppa was reading the story I have never meant for eyes past my teacher. But even more to my surprise, Poppa LOVED it!

Family Dog
Written November 28, 2001 for Senior Careers assignment titled “Funny story about my family”

Family. When most people think of this word, warm thoughts fill their head. Pictures of family dinners, vacations, and holiday celebrations come to mind. Much to my disapproval, the image I hold falls short of these standards.
Dinnertime. Never has a meal been so dreaded. Add into the equation the extended family, and you know that its going to take all you have just to choke down a few, tiny bites of the mystery feast Grandma has so graciously prepared. Sitting in our assigned seats (Grandma must remain in charge), each of us begin to scan the table for some sign that we aren’t suffering alone.
Occasionally a joke is cracked to lighten the mood, but then someone (usually Grandma) doesn’t understand and after numerous explanations, it’s considered a lost cause. After what appears to have been hours, everyone has successfully choked down their portion of the meal and graciously smiled at Grandma thanking her for the supper. Slowly, not wanting to make a scene, we one by one slide our chairs away from the table in hopes of making our getaway. Not so fast, says Grandma.
Reluctantly we scoot back up to our assigned seat. Before we can ask why we weren’t allowed to leave, Grandma answers the question for us. “Its dessert time,” she joyfully announces, as she passed around the corner from the kitchen.
Quickly everyone turns to the person who was placed next to them. Everyone is curious as to what they should expect on this tray Grandma is so proud of. The consensus is that it will be something that none of us want to eat. Unfortunately, we were right.
Without delay she begins cutting into this mound of ingredients she calls a cake. Halfheartedly we all accept a piece, but only a small one as to the fact that we are all still stuffed from her wonderful meal. Once everyone has been served, eyes start wandering, looking for the brave soul to sample our dessert first.
You can always count on Poppa. He digs in and again, tells her how great her treat is. Knowing that we cannot leave until we eat, the rest of the family follows suit. Unfortunately, not everyone shares Poppa’s love for the treat. Leave it to the little kids, who really know what dessert should taste like, to spill the beans.
“Grandma, what is this?” asked the youngest cousin with a sour look on his face.
“Yeah Grandma. Did you forget the sugar or something?” adds his older sister.
Taking this opportune time to break from their plate, everyone turns toward Grandma for the explanation. By the expressions on some faces, they would rather not be enlightened as to what exactly they are eating. Grandma fails to notice these faces.
“Well it’s a new recipe,” she begins.
We all know what’s coming next. She is going to tell us how she read that all the critics thought that this cake was just the best they had ever tasted. The sound of forks clanking onto the china breaks the silence. She proceeds with as much enthusiasm as before.
“You see, well…it um… called for sourdough instead of regular cake flour,” we are informed, if you can decipher what she is trying to say through the food in her mouth.
“Then it’s a reduced fat and sugar recipe. The picture looks really good,” she said as she finished the story.
Robotically the plates start heading toward Poppa’s end of the table upon completion of her story. He is kind of like the family dog, he finishes off the table scraps. As we all excuse ourselves from the table, we again thank Grandma for our fabulous meal and claim that we had just ate too much of the other stuff to finish our dessert.
Filing out of the kitchen, the same thought crosses everyone’s mind, “What will she find to cook for Christmas?”

Poppa kept this story for the last 12 years. He distributed it to people. He often referenced himself as “the family dog” because that was the kind of Poppa he was. We might often hear him say “Woman!” when talking to Grandma, but we also knew that he loved that woman more than anything. He would eat/drive/watch anything with Grandma, just because he loved her so much. He would eat our leftover dinner, drive us 3000 miles to collage, deliver a couch to college, show up to every school/sporting event big or small and be the loudest one to cheer us one…anything his family needed, big or small.

Our Poppa was the kind of man that we would have never been prepared to say goodbye to. It feels too soon; we aren’t ready to lose our go-to guy. There was never a time he wouldn’t help, there was never a special moment that he missed. We will all have such a large hole in our life for our family dog. But we also know that we are so blessed to have had him as our Poppa! Just like your favorite dog, they can never be replaced and will never be forgotten.

Ella and Poppa having deep conversations around the campfire. Watching the sea lions in Newport. Celebrating Grandma's birthday with a birthday crown.
Ainsley loved her Poppa. And he sure enjoyed her. They spent many hours reading books.
Aubrey and Poppa knew how to have fun. When they were together, they were laughing =)
Just a few weeks before the accident, I sent Poppa this picture of Ainsley. She has a play phone up to her head, and this was the conversation. "Hello Poppa, Ainsley. In the car. MUAH!"
Just a sampling of the love and admiration shown for him during his service. Standing room only. Police officers, fire fighters, family, friends, community...
Poppa with his 3 blue-eyed devils, as he affectionately called them. Then all 3 girls gathered by the window to watch Grandma and Poppa drive away. Goodbye Poppa.
And just like that, the - signifies the end. More memories than pictures, more moments than words.

Instalife-- March edition

Its funny to me how some things stand the test of time, and even more...what those things are. Melting beads for example. I remember making many of these in various patterns and shapes. Fast forward to a few months ago when I was walking through IKEA and whatta know... melting beads! Definitely provided an afternoon of rainy day fun =)
Homemade elephant ears... or for those of you in Douglas County, fried bread! We do a monthly alphabet dinner party and for "E" it was requested that I make elephant ears. Since I had never made them before, we had to do a trial run for dessert one night. Not brag, but first time out of the pan they were pretty darn tasty!!
Nothing better than swinging with the sunshine on your back and a frozen pancake in your hand! This girl loves her frozen pancakes even more than sisters.

Grandpa Rick finally was able to come up so we could celebrate his birthday. The weather cooperated and the girls were able to play a little softball with Grandpa in the yard.

This is a screenshot of a video of Ainsley. On March 18th, all the little girls around the world screeched with glee when the movie "Frozen" was released on DVD. Ainsley kept saying. "Frozen. Its Frozen." We have watched that movie each day since March 18th and listen to the soundtrack whenever we aren't watching the movie. Some may say they are obsessed!!

Spring break in Oregon will guarantee one thing...rain!! We had one day of sunshine and took full advantage of that day. Picnic, park, swinging with friends.....check check check! Caleb and Ainsley are sometimes too cute for words =)
This smiley girl in the past week has: gone potty on the toilet, started calling me 'Mom.' and had her fingernails painted for the first time to which she promptly replied, "They are beautiful!" Time sure flies when you are having fun. Hard to believe in a month she will be 2! What happened to my baby?

Poppa's balloons

Grief. This is an unfamiliar road. Add to this unfamiliar road is the fact that we have 3 small girls along on the ride. There is no manual, more questions than answers and the reality that everyone grieves differently. Its hard to even know where to start this blog post, yet I feel that I must post, I need to include these pictures, our memories, this time....because this is our life. Right now, this is the sad/not sunny/wish-I-had-any-other-event-to-write about part of our family's story.

February 3, 2014. Monday. A call from a man who worked with Poppa for many years. There had been an accident- 1 car, Poppa's truck and a loaded log truck; unfortunately Poppa's truck had been hit by both and he instantly went to be with Jesus.

Each of the girls responded differently to the news.

Ella, she is our thinker. She immediately started realizing the impact this would have on life. Poppa would not go camping with us this summer. She hadn't seen Poppa this year, 2014; we last saw him the end of December, which in reality is last year. (It makes it sound so much longer ago than it really was, but she is literal and correct.) It was the quiet down moments in bed when Ella's grief overtook her. Ella also became very sad when she realized that Poppa would miss Valentine's Day (hence Poppa's balloon).

Aubrey, she is our deal-with-the-emotion-and-move-on personality. Aubrey just sat, looked around as her eyes welled up. She didn't have the words to express the thoughts in her head. The only way she could express herself was to say "I've never had this much sadness in my heart before." (You are so right Aubrey. None of us have ever had this much sadness in our hearts.) After the first day, she looked for ways to remember Poppa. "OH! Poppa liked water. Every time I drink water I will remember Poppa!" She saw a random man at Costco and immediately was drawn to his belt buckle. It had an eagle on it, just like Poppa she noticed! It had never occurred to me that at her size, Poppa's belt buckle was probably his most defining characteristic =)

Ainsley, she is our innocent soul. How do you explain to a toddler? She is the one I worried about most. How would I possibly answer her when she walked into grandma's house and asked for Poppa? What can you say to help her understand? I'm so thankful that she somehow just 'understood.' Its been one month, and to this day she has never asked for Poppa. She still knows who he is, she will point him out in pictures, she knows that it is his trailer parked at their house, but somehow, in the course of our talking about the accident, she understands that Poppa is no longer here. Forever, we referred to them as Grandma & Poppa; it was a synonymous phrase. In the week preparing to go down for the service, we began telling the girls we were going to Grandma Marian's. Instantly, Ainsley switched and began saying "Grandma Marian" in place of all times we would have said 'Grandma & Poppa;'she knew it was a 2-word phrase so this was a logical replacement. I am in awe of how this works and so thankful that I wasn't left trying to find the words.

Me. I'm familiar with other families grief, I work in a setting where this tragic day strikes families often. But I haven't had to walk this road myself. I found that most of the time I would let the tears fall, but it was in the process of helping my girls. My heart broke for me, but my heart breaks more for them. I wanted them to have Poppa longer. It pains me to the deepest part of my heart that Ainsley will never have her own memories of him, she will have our stories, she will have pictures but she will not hold the same special place in her heart for him that the rest of us have. Being so wrapped up in helping them, the grief will hit me in those quiet moments lying in bed when the thoughts become overwhelming.

With tragic accidents, there is no chance to say goodbye. No one last moments to squeeze in. Ella hated the idea that Poppa would miss Valentine's Day, so she wanted to send him a valentine on a balloon. It was a beautiful idea that broke my heart because she wanted to know if he would send her a valentine back.

I have to chuckle at Ella's valentine. As she was writing it, she asked how to spell "poppa." Courtney tells her "papa" while I say "poppa." Turns out Poppa spelled it "poppa" while Grandma Marian spells is "papa" so Ella included both spellings just to make sure that that it was correct!!
Another amazing moment: We explained to the kids how we would release the balloons all together. After we let go of the balloons, not one single kid  cried or wanted their balloons back, not even Kolby or Ainsley. We had our own special family moment of sending Poppa our love, all together, one last time.

We didn't plan to do it at sunset, but it made for a beautiful backdrop.

Family. We definitely have grown closer and held onto one another a little tighter this past month.
Everyone stood practically in the same place where we released the balloons until they were out of sight.
Thank you Laura for sharing your wonderful talent and capturing this moment so beautifully. I L.O.V.E. this picture!
While my heart breaks a little more each time I think of the memories these faces won't get to create with Poppa, I'm also so grateful that each one of them got to know him. I'm thankful for getting to watch Poppa bond and love on my girls. I'm thankful that because of them we have extra special memories with Poppa.
Valentines Day was unfortunately just the beginning of the 1sts we will have to endure and learn the new normal without Poppa. We definitely are still at the beginning of the road. Life will never be the same but fortunately we are all forever changed because of Poppa.

"If there ever comes a day when we can't be together, keep me in your heart, I'll stay there forever." -Winnie the Pooh

Instalife..... February edition

This February post is heavy-hearted. The month of love left us missing our very special and beloved Poppa. I have a whole post I want to do, remembering everything about him but I don't know if I'm quite ready yet...

Can you guess who the master photographer of this Instagram pic was? LOL
Ainsley is growing up so fast! She has a HUGE vocabulary and is so willing to try and learn new things. Here you can see how well she is at getting herself dressed. Yes, she already had pajamas on. Yes, the orange article of clothing on the left is Ella's undies. Yes, she put a shirt on as pants. But, "Ainsley do it!"
This picture mean so SO much to the girls and I. It is the perfect way we want to remember Poppa. Lots of smiles and love! He loved the fact that he finally had some bright blue-eyed grandbabies and often called them his "blue-eyed devils!"
Digging through photos for Poppa's service uncovered this gem. Aren't you jealous of my 4th grade fashionista style? And I mean, those bangs....that takes skill ;-) Good thing I love you so much Poppa, otherwise I think I would have refrained from sharing this side of myself with the world =0
So bittersweet! Saying goodbye to Poppa was so hard. Looking at these sweet faces fills me with so much sadness that they weren't able to have him around just a little bit longer. But we are so so grateful that they all knew him and loved him!
This picture makes me think of A Christmas Story where he gets so bundled up he can't move his arms, then starts flapping around saying "But I have to go to the bathroom!"
What is cuter than Ainsley as a ladybug? Ainsley as a ladybug roller skating for the 1st time!!! She will not be left out of anything fun. After about 3/4 of a lap (half with mom helping, half doing it all by herself) she says "Ainsley all done roller skating. Ainsley fall down!" Good thing she wore her bug costume, at least it had a little extra padding in the back ;-)
While Grandma was up visiting, she was able to keep Ainsley so I could go on Aubrey's field trip to the dentist!
Some days, it feels as if you never get caught up before then next thing demands your attention. I had just finished vacuuming and heard a loud crash. In the utility room, I found the light fixture had just randomly fell from the ceiling shattering A.L.L. over the entire room! At least I hadn't put the vacuum away....
2 days, 2 cute dates, 2 straws covered in whipped cream...I am one lucky momma to get to spend special time with each one of these girls!
My heart is full!!!
Sunshine and riding 2 wheels! Go Aubrey go!!!!
